Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has launched an attack on the media coverage of certain incidents involving the club's players, arguing that there is an exaggeration in the way their private lives are discussed.
Mourinho stressed that Real Madrid are experiencing a state of professional commitment, during the press conference ahead of their match against Villarreal on Saturday evening in the Spanish League.
The 63-year-old Portuguese coach criticized what he described as the search for non-existent crises, citing the controversy surrounding the appearance of some players in recreational areas or the use of bicycles during holidays, considering that these incidents were exaggerated by the media.
Mourinho addressed the controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappe, after the player finished his international duty with knee pain, before appearing on a bicycle during his vacation.
In this regard, the "Special One" said: "If there is a trial for Mbappe, it will be a great victory for you (journalists)."
Mourinho added in his first appearance at the press conference in Valdebebas after 18 days without speaking to the press: "Actually, I thought during the last few weeks that you had enough issues to talk about, but it seems that it wasn't enough. Real Madrid is Real Madrid, and you always have to find something. I actually expected that the first question would be the only one related to the match, but here we are."
He continued: "I find the whole Mbappe affair ridiculous. For me, a player is responsible for himself 24/7. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: any negative action a player takes in his private life always has repercussions. I constantly emphasize that a player is human and can make mistakes, but he must have a sense of responsibility."
He continued: "I haven't been here for 13 years, but I think you know me to some extent, and I'm not lying. I may avoid some of the more complicated issues, but I'm not lying, during this period, the Real Madrid players have been exemplary, and we worked hard here to ensure they could perform their duties professionally with their national teams, and they all did what was required of them."
Mourinho added: "Every player who is injured comes to Valdebebas immediately and undergoes the necessary tests to diagnose his condition. As for players like Arda Guler, who was excused from international participation, it was me, and no one else, who gave him two extra days of rest. Every player who was injured was here every day."
He explained: "Mbappe went for an external medical consultation regarding his knee, because he has an injury history that cannot be ignored, and there was complete agreement between Real Madrid's diagnosis and the diagnosis he received."
He continued: "Then we enter the world of looking for problems. The problems of football during this week were not enough, so you went looking for other problems. At first, there was the story of the nightclub that was converted into a venue for Paris Fashion Week. Then came the talk about the completely quiet hotel in Switzerland, where there are two bicycles in each apartment for getting around."
Mourinho concluded by saying: "This is the first time in 10 years that there hasn't been a single injury in two months. All the injuries go back to last year, and that's a good story, but you don't like to talk about it."
