Media reports have revealed the reason behind the change of referee for the Al-Nasr vs. Al-Diriyah match, which took place on Friday evening, as part of the eighth round of the Saudi Professional Football League.
Saudi referee Khaled Al-Turais was scheduled to officiate the Al-Nasr vs. Al-Diriyah match, before he was replaced by referee Mohammed Al-Smaeel.
The change came in anticipation of the foreign refereeing team not arriving to manage the "Classic" match between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, as Al-Turais's name is being put forward to lead the anticipated match if the foreign referees are unable to attend.
This measure is intended to keep Al-Turais as an available option to manage the Clasico, instead of assigning him to the Al-Nasr and Al-Diriyah match, pending a decision on the foreign refereeing team.
Al-Nasr currently occupies third place in the Roshan Professional League standings with 16 points, while Al-Diriyah sits in eighth place with 11 points, ahead of the anticipated match between the two teams.
The "Clásico" match is of great importance in light of the direct struggle for the top spot in the standings, as Al-Hilal Club occupies the top spot with 18 points, one point ahead of its rival Al-Ittihad.
