Konyaspor and the Palestinian reserve team
The Konya Metropolitan Municipality Stadium witnessed a large public turnout, where Turkish fans raised Palestinian flags and presented public displays and banners that carried messages of solidarity with Palestine, including pictures to commemorate Palestinian athletes and a picture of the martyr Muhammad al-Durrah.
The Palestinian national team delegation was also received in the city amidst a festive atmosphere and supportive chants.
The expressions of solidarity were not limited to the stands, as the stadium screens and advertising boards carried messages related to Gaza and Palestine, while the players of the Palestinian national team and Konyaspor wore the Palestinian keffiyeh during the group photo, and a design bearing the symbol of peace appeared on the field.
At the 10th minute and 14th second of the match, the players of both teams stopped playing, while the stadium lights were turned off, in reference to the number 1014, which has been used to commemorate Palestinian athletes who have lost their lives since October 7, 2023.
Fans lit up their phones in the darkness of the stands, while messages of solidarity appeared on the stadium screens, in one of the most prominent and symbolic moments of the match.
The meeting also included an initiative directed towards Palestinian children, where toys and dolls were thrown onto the playground floor, in a message of solidarity with the children who are living in harsh conditions due to the war.
The match was stopped before the final whistle.
On the field, the match ended in a 2-2 draw, after Mohammed Sandouqa scored both goals for the Palestinian national team, while Konyaspor scored two goals, one of which was scored by Egyptian striker Mostafa Mohamed, who scored his first goal in the Turkish team's jersey.
But the match did not reach the 90th minute, as the referee blew the final whistle at 89 minutes and 59 seconds, after an announcement inside the stadium stating that the match was "postponed until Palestine is liberated."
The symbolic ending came to express that the match, like many details of Palestinian life, was not completed, in a message that was also linked to the slogan of the match, "Our home is your home," which reflects the Palestinian national team being deprived of playing a number of its matches on its home ground due to the conditions of the Israeli occupation and restrictions on movement.
