The university announced that its supreme council unanimously approved awarding Messi this honor, in recognition of his sporting career and his role in representing Argentina. The degree will be presented to him next Tuesday, October 6, hours before his farewell match with the Argentine national team against Benin at the Monumental Stadium.
The university explained in its decision that Messi's career represents a model of "excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical practice," in addition to his commitment to representing his country, values that the institution said it is keen to promote.
University President Ricardo Gilbe said the honor is not only related to Messi's on-field records and achievements, but also to his status as an "ambassador of popular culture and national identity" in Argentina.
The university highlighted Messi’s career with the national team, which saw him win the Copa America in 2021, the Finalesma in 2022, the World Cup in 2022, and the Copa America in 2024, in addition to reaching the runner-up position in the 2026 World Cup.
This tribute comes in conjunction with the highly anticipated match against Benin, which will mark Messi's farewell to the Argentine national team, more than two decades after his first appearance in the "Albiceleste" jersey.
According to the Argentine news agency, Messi enters the match holding records with the national team, as he is the all-time top scorer with 125 goals, and holds the record for assists with 68, and has played 207 matches in the Argentine jersey.
