Kim shot a final-round 64 to finish the tournament with a total of 262, 18 under par, three strokes ahead of Japan’s Kazuki Higa, China’s Ding Wen Yi and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana.

Given the lack of monetary prizes, the continent's top players usually ignore the Asian Games, but there was a lot at stake for Kim.

South Korea grants exemptions from military service to athletes who win a gold medal at the Asian Games or any medal at the Olympic Games.

Physically able-bodied South Korean men typically perform at least 18 months of military service as part of efforts to maintain a deterrent force against North Korea.

Kim stressed that he was more focused on winning a medal for South Korea than on any personal motivation.

Kim, who competed for a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics before finishing eighth, said: "It's a strange feeling. I'm just glad it's over."

He added, "This was the longest day I've ever had in my life. It only lasted five or six hours, but it was definitely the longest, and I'm glad it's over."
