The preliminary results of his tests were presented at the 39th Annual Conference of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM'26).
Positron emission tomography (PET) combined with computed tomography (CT) is the most advanced non-invasive imaging method available today. Generally, these devices have a narrow field of view, and imaging the entire body requires a series of five to six "tabletop positions" from head to thigh. Systems with a long axial field of view (LA-FOV) capture a much larger portion of the body at once and receive a greater contrast signal.
The two systems were tested at Peter MacCallum's clinic in Melbourne on 24 patients. Two doctors blindly evaluated the images. The one-minute images received a score of 4.5-5 for diagnostic quality, while the traditional scanner received a score of 3.9.
Physicist Cameron Payne said: "Even after reducing data collection time by 90%, we achieved higher quality compared to the traditional methods currently in use."
Rapid positron emission tomography (PET) scans may be more comfortable for people who experience pain or find it difficult to remain still. They can also increase the number of scans and, in the long term, reduce the dose of radiopharmaceuticals.
