Combination therapy prolongs survival in lung cancer patients

A clinical study revealed that combining the drugs "Imdeltra" and "Imfinzi" reduces the risk of death by 58% in patients with advanced small cell lung cancer, compared to using "Imfinzi" alone.

The results of the study, which included 563 patients and was presented during the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in Madrid, showed that the average survival time was 21.1 months for patients who received the combination therapy, compared to 12.7 months for those who received Imfinzi alone.

Amgen's Imdeltra belongs to the class of bispecific antibodies, which help the immune system target cancer cells, while AstraZeneca's Imfinzi works to enhance the immune system's ability to fight the tumor.

Paul Burton, Amgen's medical director, said that using Amdeltra at an earlier stage is associated with greater clinical benefit.

Survival: Approximately 80% of patients who received the combination therapy were still alive after one year, compared to 53% of those who received Imfinzi alone.

Serious side effects: appeared in 20.9% of patients who received the combination therapy, compared to 10.8% in the other group.

Cytokine release syndrome: This occurred in 49.6% of patients treated with Amdeltra, but only one case was severe, and no deaths were reported. (Cytokine release syndrome is a strong and excessive immune response that occurs when the immune system releases large amounts of substances called cytokines, which are proteins that help immune cells communicate and regulate the response to infection or cancer.)

Discontinuation of treatment: Side effects led to discontinuation of treatment in 5.7% of the combination therapy group, compared to 5.8% of those who received Imfinzi alone.

Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive and rapidly spreading type of lung cancer, accounting for up to 15% of all lung cancer cases. Because surgical options are limited for patients with this type of cancer, treatment often relies on chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The five-year survival rate is approximately 9%, according to the American Cancer Society.

The advertised price of the drug "Imdeltra" in the United States is about $30,000 per treatment course, while analysts expect its annual sales to exceed $2.5 billion by 2030.
