The doctor explains how to modify the diet, and the situations in which heartburn requires a visit to the doctor.

According to him, certain foods and drinks can worsen heartburn, especially in people who experience it regularly. These include citrus fruits, sour apples, tomatoes, fatty and fried foods, onions, garlic, hot sauces, chocolate, carbonated drinks, and sweet pastries.

He says: "Coffee may increase the symptoms of heartburn, because it stimulates the production of stomach acid and helps to relax the sphincter muscle, which is a valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus, thus increasing the risk of stomach contents refluxing into the esophagus."

Discomfort after eating can also occur if a person eats too quickly or hastily, or overeats. Therefore, it is advisable to choose easily digestible foods that do not cause discomfort for breakfast, such as oatmeal, low-fat cottage cheese, steamed omelets, grilled fruit, and whole-grain bread.

The doctor recommends avoiding overeating and eating slowly. He also advises drinking coffee during or after meals, consuming warm foods and drinks instead of very hot ones, and avoiding lying down or bending over immediately after breakfast.

According to him, infrequent episodes of heartburn that resolve quickly do not necessarily indicate an underlying health problem. However, if heartburn occurs two or three times a week or more, a doctor should be consulted. Difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, and persistent symptoms despite dietary changes also warrant medical attention and advice. Vomiting blood or experiencing severe abdominal pain requires immediate medical attention.
