According to him, some medications are very dangerous when taken without a prescription, as a mistake in choosing the right medication or dosage can lead to serious consequences. These include medications used to lower blood pressure and regulate heart rate.
He points out that taking medication simply because it helped a friend is dangerous. Even if blood pressure readings match, it doesn't necessarily mean the same treatment is suitable for both. Taking an inappropriate medication or an overdose can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness, or an irregular heartbeat.
Furthermore, antibiotics should not be taken without a prescription to treat a sore throat or fever. It is impossible to determine whether an infection is bacterial or viral based on symptoms alone. Therefore, taking antibiotics for a sore throat or fever without consulting a doctor is not recommended, as they may have side effects and could increase the likelihood of antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
According to him, hormonal drugs, including systemic corticosteroids, significantly affect metabolic processes. With prolonged use of some of them, the body reduces its natural production of hormones.
He says: "Therefore, it is dangerous not only to start this treatment without a prescription, but also for a person to change the treatment regimen on their own or to stop it suddenly. Because in some cases, the dose must be gradually reduced."
Anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are used to prevent blood clots, but incorrect dosage increases the risk of bleeding. Their effects may also be altered when taken with other medications or foods. Psychiatric medications and anticonvulsants require individualized selection, as sudden changes, missed doses, or discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms.
He says: “Just because a drug is available without a prescription does not mean it is completely risk-free. Pain relievers, fever reducers, and antihistamines should be used strictly according to the instructions. If symptoms return or a person has to take medication continuously, they should consult a doctor instead of continuing self-treatment.”
