The institute explained in its daily report that the past twenty-four hours witnessed the registration of 62 new infections and 30 deaths, while 24 patients recovered, bringing the total number of infections recorded since the beginning of the outbreak to 8,665 cases, compared to 4,178 deaths.
The rise in infections and deaths comes at a time when Congolese authorities are intensifying their efforts to contain the outbreak, amid growing international support for the health sector and the fight against the epidemic.
France announced on Tuesday its intention to increase its aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo to €23 million in 2026 to fund efforts to combat the Ebola epidemic. The announcement was made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who recently visited the country.
Last September, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced a 180-day emergency plan to combat the Ebola outbreak, with estimated funding needs of approximately $1.3 billion.
Authorities face additional challenges in dealing with the new strain of the virus, as official data indicates that there is no vaccine or licensed treatment yet for this strain, known as "Bundibugyo".
Ebola virus is a highly dangerous viral disease that can be transmitted between people through contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person, and mortality rates vary depending on the strain and available healthcare conditions.
