Deputy Governor Romdon Hiawai explained that the floods affected all three provinces on the island, including the capital city of Phuket, noting that the water level had begun to recede by mid-morning, but some low-lying areas were still submerged, and drivers of small vehicles were advised to avoid them.
He added that parts of the province were also affected by mudslides, and that specialized teams are working to remove debris to prevent it from reaching the canals and obstructing the movement of water.
Social media users shared photos and videos showing water flowing into residential areas, flooding a number of roads and turning them into impassable routes, while vehicles appeared to be partially buried in piles of mud and rocks left behind by the floods.
Romdon noted that about 100 families were affected by the floods, confirming that no injuries were reported.
In the same context, the Thai Meteorological Department warned of continued heavy rainfall in the southern region until Wednesday, which could lead to more flash floods and landslides.
Floods have struck large areas of Thailand since mid-September, killing at least 83 people as of Monday, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
The capital, Bangkok, was flooded in late September after days of heavy rain, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate and causing widespread disruption.
