Politico revealed that the European Union is considering a range of measures that could hinder the return of Russian athletes to international competitions at a time when several sports federations are moving towards easing restrictions on them.

The newspaper, citing a document issued by the European External Action Service on September 16, indicated that the proposals are still under consideration and no final decisions have been made regarding them.
The options under consideration include imposing individual sanctions on Russian athletes, visa restrictions for those competing under the national flag, and reducing European grants to international sports federations that allow Russian participation.
The proposals also include a review of the mechanisms for distributing television broadcasting rights revenues, and putting pressure on broadcasters and sponsors associated with tournaments in which Russian athletes participate.
This comes after some international federations began easing restrictions, following developments in the Olympic movement in recent months, as the International Olympic Committee last July cancelled its recommendations to impose restrictions on Russian athletes, including procedures to verify the conditions of their participation as neutral athletes, and reinstated recognition of the Russian Olympic Committee.
It is not yet clear whether the European proposals will become official measures, or how they will affect the participation of Russian athletes in upcoming international championships.
