According to him, nasal drops may affect blood vessels throughout the body, so some people may experience high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, headaches, or anxiety.

He says: “These medications work by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa, which reduces congestion and helps restore normal nasal breathing. However, prolonged use of the drops may lead to a disruption of the natural regulation of blood vessel tension. When the effect of the medication wears off, the blood vessels dilate again, the mucosa swells, and nasal congestion increases, so the patient feels that he cannot breathe without using the drops.”

He added: "It is also important to note that the effect of vasoconstrictors is not limited to the site of their use, as part of the drug can be absorbed into the bloodstream, affecting blood vessels throughout the body. Therefore, some people may experience high blood pressure, heart palpitations, headaches, or anxiety."

The doctor emphasizes the need for people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease to exercise extreme caution when using these drops.

He says: "This is not a myth, but that does not necessarily mean that a single dose will raise the user's blood pressure. The level of risk depends on the type of medication, the dose, the duration of use, and individual characteristics. Even if a person has been using decongestant drops for months or years, it does not mean that they will have to use them for life. In most cases, the problem can be solved by breaking this vicious cycle and treating the underlying cause of nasal congestion at the same time."

According to him, suitable alternatives for cardiovascular patients and those who wish to be cautious include saline nasal sprays and rinses, humidifying the air, inhaling warm steam, and sleeping with the head elevated. For allergic rhinitis, nasal steroid sprays and nasal antihistamines can be used.
