She says: "In cases of iron deficiency, nails may become thin, brittle, and concave, taking on a spoon-like shape. Extreme brittleness may also accompany malnutrition, thyroid disease, and some chronic illnesses. However, the appearance of the nails alone does not allow for the identification of the health problem the body is suffering from."
According to her, changes in the color, thickness, or structure of the nail plate may be related to a local infection or injury. For example, small white spots that appear after a manicure, a blow, or other minor injuries are very common.
But there are rare and distinctive changes. For example, rounded nails with ridged fingertips, a condition known as "drumstick nails," may appear in people with certain lung and heart diseases.
The doctor recommends paying special attention to the darkening of the nails, explaining that the appearance of a pigmented line, especially on one nail, and its gradual widening or change in color, requires examination by a dermatologist, as the cause in rare cases may be a melanoma tumor in the nail.
