The study, led by researchers from the Universities of Nottingham and Sheffield and published in the journal Frontiers, identified fundamental changes in the biological processes that govern ovarian function and sperm production, thus providing in-depth insights into the mechanisms underlying the link between smoking and reproductive health.

Infertility is a widespread global problem, with about one-sixth of the world's reproductive-age population suffering from the condition at some point in their fertile lives, according to the World Health Organization.

In this new study, researchers used a mouse model to investigate the effects of varying levels of cigarette smoke exposure on the ovaries and testes. The research focused on changes in reproductive tissue and the activity of genes involved in their normal function, aiming to provide explanations for the biological processes that may affect human fertility.

The effect of cigarette smoke on the ovaries

In females, the ovarian follicles—the structures in which eggs develop—did not show significant structural changes, even at high levels of exposure. However, researchers did observe marked changes in the activity of several genes. Genes responsible for cell division and metabolism showed decreased activity, while genes associated with protein production showed increased activity. This pattern of gene activity resembled biological patterns associated with ovarian aging and declining function.

The effect of cigarette smoke on the testicles

Higher levels of cigarette smoke exposure in males have been linked to structural changes within the testes, including enlargement of the seminiferous tubules. In addition, alterations have been observed in the activity of genes controlling sperm production, immune responses, and cellular signaling. The activity of some genes associated with sperm production has increased, while the activity of other genes involved in immune function has decreased.

These results suggest that exposure to cigarette smoke may alter vital biological processes of normal testicular function and sperm development.

Although the study was limited to mice, it provides valuable mechanistic insights into the impact of parental smoking on their reproductive health, with researchers emphasizing the need for further research to link these biological changes to fertility in humans.
