The Croatian national team suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat against their English counterparts in the third round of the group stage of the UEFA Nations League, in a match that witnessed a clear superiority of the English team amidst a state of shock among the Croatian players and their fans.
Modric said in statements published by the Spanish newspaper AS: "I have been here for 20 years, and I admit that I feel ashamed for the first time after a match."
Modric emphasized after the crushing defeat of one of the strongest teams of this century: "You can lose to the best, but to lose in this way and tarnish your reputation at the same time is unacceptable."
AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric said: "For the first time in 20 years, I feel genuinely ashamed."

Modric is one of the most prominent leaders of the golden generation of Croatian football, having led his national team to achieve historic results in recent years, so his statements reflected the extent of his disappointment after the big defeat against England.
