Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Monenegro intervened in the crisis that erupted within the Portuguese national team camp after he contacted coach Jorge Jesus on the same day that star Cristiano Ronaldo announced his departure from the camp.

Cristiano Ronaldo had announced via his social media accounts his decision to leave the Portugal national team camp following the press conference held by Jorge Jesus and after a conversation with Pedro Proença.

The Portuguese political newspaper Observador said that the Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus crisis has turned into a national issue in Portugal.

She added: "Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro made telephone calls to the main parties in the crisis, speaking with Pedro Proença and Jorge Jesus, and also made sure to speak with Cristiano Ronaldo."

The newspaper confirmed that Montenegro was concerned about the repercussions of Ronaldo's departure from the national team camp, not only on the national team and the Portuguese Federation, but also on Portugal's image and reputation on the international stage.

The newspaper added that former Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa called for unity, stressing that the most important thing is to stand behind the national team at this crucial stage.

These developments come after a crisis that began after the Norway match, when Ronaldo remained on the bench despite participating in the warm-up, amid reports of a prior agreement regarding the matches he would participate in during the international break.

The Portuguese national team is preparing to face Denmark away from home and then host Norway on Sunday in Porto, amid anticipation of developments in the crisis and Ronaldo's stance on returning to the national team.
