Scientists at the annual conference of the American Academy of Ophthalmology pointed out that the lens they developed contains a drug that is released gradually to lower eye pressure, thus eliminating the need for daily eye drops for those with glaucoma and cataracts.
The trial included 106 people with glaucoma or high eye pressure who were candidates for cataract surgery. Most of them had experimental lenses implanted containing the drug, while the rest had conventional lenses implanted and continued to use eye drops. After a year, the eye pressure in the patients who had the new lenses implanted was almost identical to the eye pressure in those who used daily drops.
Furthermore, more than 95% of patients who had experimental lenses implanted did not require additional glaucoma medication one year after surgery.
The unique feature of this technology is that the lens gradually releases the drug bimatoprost, which helps to lower eye pressure, the high pressure of which can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss.
Scientists believe this development will enable them to address two problems during a single surgical procedure and simplify the treatment of glaucoma.
