The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, reminded the government to also pay attention to officers and volunteers in the field who are struggling to handle forest and land fires.

He believes the government needs to guarantee their safety. He also expressed his condolences for the deaths of several officers and volunteers who were helping to extinguish the forest and land fires.

"Of course, we are very grateful for the dedication of the officers and the assistance of volunteers in the process of handling forest and land fires," said Puan in Jakarta, Friday.

According to him, the series of deaths of officers and volunteers reinforces the urgency of accelerating forest and land fire control and protecting all parties facing its impacts, including the impact of the fire smoke.

"The officers and volunteers assisting with the response departed with the hope of saving others and returning them to their families. That dedication requires reliable protection," he said.

He said the large number of officers and volunteers who died demanded that the state evaluate the standard operating procedures for the forest and land fire extinguishing process, particularly the safety standards for those involved in helping to handle the forest and land fires.

"Forest and land fire extinguishing officers and volunteers are humanitarian heroes because they fight to ensure public safety. Their sacrifices deserve proper protection and recognition from the state," he said.

In addition, he also expressed his appreciation to women who have volunteered in handling forest and land fires.

Based on the information he received, a number of officers and volunteers died while fighting to extinguish the forest and land fires.

At least 9 officers and volunteers fighting forest and land fires died, consisting of 3 people in Central Kalimantan, 5 officers/volunteers from the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park  in Probolinggo, and most recently one person in Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan, named Nurdin.
