As reported by Rosatom, the two devices, which are about 16 meters high, were placed in the machine room of the future nuclear power plant.
Steam separators are essential for preparing the steam before it enters the turbine. Water droplets can remain in the steam and damage the turbine blades when they rotate at high speed. These separators remove moisture and help maintain the required steam specifications, reducing wear and tear and increasing turbine efficiency.
It is worth noting that the BREST-OD-300 reactor, with a capacity of 300 megawatts, is being built at the Siberian Chemical Complex as part of the PROREV (Breakthrough) project. It is an experimental fast neutron reactor, cooled with molten lead. Its primary mission is to test the operation of a closed nuclear fuel cycle, where spent fuel is recycled and valuable fuel components are returned to production.
In order to operate the reactor, it is planned to use a mixed uranium-plutonium fuel made from low-enriched depleted uranium and reprocessed plutonium.
This approach may allow for more complete use of nuclear materials and reduce the share of long-lived components in waste, but it will not eliminate them entirely.
The turbine unit's foundation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, after which turbine installation will begin. The true advantages of the BREST reactor still need to be confirmed during its operation.
