Yevgeny Tarasyuk, director of the National Medical Research Center Meshalkin, announced the development of an alcoholic drug for treating heart rhythm disorders, which would significantly reduce the cost of treatment.

Tarasyuk said: "The pre-clinical trials for the drug have been completed, and we are now waiting for the first phase of clinical trials to begin."

Alexander Romanov, the center's deputy director for scientific affairs, pointed out that a large percentage of patients with heart rhythm disorders do not respond to traditional treatments, including drug therapy and catheter ablation, forcing many of them to undergo repeated surgeries, and prompting scientists to search for alternative ways to help these patients.

He explained that the innovative drug consists of a mixture of two types of alcohol, ethanol and isobutanol, with the addition of the stabilizer disulfiram. The drug is to be injected into the coronary sinus, the largest vein in the heart, using a special balloon catheter similar to those used in coronary angiography or stent placement.

The center's specialists have completed preclinical animal trials and produced the first batch of the drug in a certified laboratory. They have also submitted an application to the Ministry of Health for approval to conduct the first phase of clinical trials.

Tarasyuk said: "We hope to start drug trials in mid-November. We have selected the patients and will contact them to schedule the procedure. We expect the drug to be available on the market between 2029 and 2030."
