Sabalenka bids farewell to the China Open at the hands of Czech player Bartonkova

Sabalenka lost her serve in the opening game and wasted five break points in the sixth game of the first set before losing the match in one hour and 35 minutes.

Bartonkova, 20, said: "I focused on myself and on being calm. Arina is fantastic. She's a legend. She's a Grand Slam champion."

Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has not won a title since achieving the "Sunshine Double" by winning Indian Wells and Miami earlier this year.

The Belarusian player reached the US Open final last month but lost to Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, ending the season without winning one of the four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time since 2022.

Rybakina replaced Sabalenka at the top of the women's world rankings after the US Open.
