During the study, researchers analyzed data from 4,447 people in Vietnam with an average age of about 70 years, and monitored the participants for four years, assessing the duration and regularity of their daytime naps and the quality of their nighttime rest. During the study period, they recorded the deaths of 514 study participants.

It was found that people who habitually took an hour or more of daytime naps had a 39% higher chance of dying compared to those who did not nap during the day, and this relationship persisted even after taking into account the quality of nighttime sleep and other factors.

In contrast, short naps of less than 30 minutes, and rest periods between 30 and 59 minutes, did not show any statistically significant association with an increased risk of death.

Scientists also discovered that the quality of nighttime sleep affected the relationship between daytime rest and mortality, but the high risk remained for those who habitually slept more than an hour during the day, regardless of the quality of their nighttime sleep.

The researchers believe that long naps may be an indicator of health problems in older adults, but the study does not prove that daytime naps themselves increase the risk of death, as they may reflect pre-existing disorders in the body.
