The hidden danger of Chernobyl: radioactive nuclear fragments resisting change for 40 years

A scientific study has revealed that some radioactive nuclear fuel fragments resulting from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster still retain a large part of their original structure, despite the passage of nearly four decades.

This raises concerns about the persistence of its environmental effects and the difficulty of assessing its long-term health risks.

Researchers from Leibniz University Hanover and the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf examined six radioactive particles, using X-ray techniques, to determine the changes that have occurred to them over time.

The results showed that some of the particles were more stable than expected, as they retained a large part of their original structure despite being exposed to environmental factors since the incident.

The researchers classified the particles into three main categories:

Category 3: Particles resulting from changes in nuclear fuel caused by the fire that broke out inside the reactor and lasted for ten days.

Some of these materials may break down into microscopic particles that travel through the air, making inhaling them a health hazard due to their radioactive content.

Researchers, in a study published in the journal Hazardous Materials, indicated that these particles may retain radioactive materials for extended periods and continue to release radionuclides into the environment. (Radionuclides are unstable atoms that emit radiation as they decay, and this can continue for varying periods depending on the type of material.)

But researcher Tobias Weissenborn cautioned against generalizing the results, explaining that the study was limited to six particles collected from only two locations.

He stressed that assessing the stability of these particles and their health risks requires:

The results indicate that some effects of the Chernobyl disaster may persist for longer periods than expected, while further research is still needed to accurately determine the extent of the health and environmental risks.
