The Minister of Communication and Digital emphasized the importance of limiting children's access to digital platforms

Minister of Communication and Digital  Meutya Hafid emphasized the importance of limiting children's access to digital platforms to protect them from the threat of crime in the digital space.
"Children face many risks when they are in the digital realm, which is indeed very free," said the Minister of Communication and Digital at the Open House event of Kemala Taruna Bhayangkara High School in Bogor.

"That's why, in accordance with the President's direction, we are regulating how children's access to high-risk digital ecosystems will be delayed ," he said, as quoted in a government press release.

Government Regulation Number 21 of 2025 concerning the Governance of Electronic Systems for Child Protection or PP TUNAS includes restrictions on access for children up to 16 years of age to high-risk digital platforms.

Meutya explained that the regulation was drafted with attention to the risks children face when accessing digital platforms, including addiction, interactions with strangers, exposure to harmful content, commercial exploitation, and threats to children's health and safety.

According to him, some social media and gaming platforms are designed to keep users on them continuously, making it difficult for children to control their use of digital devices.

"Many children are intentionally addicted to the design of social media products, games, and other products, so when they're withdrawn, they become emotional. When they're forbidden, they can get angry with their parents, and some even hurt their parents," he explained.

In addition, digital platforms with communication features that allow children to interact with strangers can open up opportunities for bullying, fraud, and sexual exploitation.

Activities in the digital space also pose risks of personal data misuse and physical and mental health problems for children.
