In his last match with his national team, Messi led his country to a 3-0 victory over Benin in a friendly match early Wednesday morning, scoring a penalty goal and creating two goals at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Following the final whistle, Messi's teammates and the Benin players gathered around him to congratulate and bid him farewell in his last international appearance. Referee Fikar also participated in the farewell moment, warmly shaking hands with the Argentine star.

Fernando Fijar surprised Messi with a strange act, when he presented him with the yellow and red cards that he had used during the match.

Lionel Messi, 39, had written a statement announcing his retirement from international football two days after Argentina's loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, before officially announcing his decision in August.

Messi brought his international career to a close early Wednesday morning with a moving speech on the pitch that brought tears to the eyes of several of his teammates, including Manchester City star Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off in the 2026 World Cup final.

Messi told fans inside the Monumental Stadium: "There are so many emotions I'm experiencing right now, I'm probably forgetting a lot of things I'd like to say because this is a very difficult moment for me. I leave feeling grateful, proud, and with a clear conscience. Thank you for everything."

Messi ended his career with the Argentine national team with 126 goals in 208 international matches, after leading his country to victory in the 2022 World Cup.
