Trump mocks French protests

US President Donald Trump joked about "joining the revolution" in France, as protests took place in Paris and other French cities on Saturday.

"Let's go to France and join the revolution and spend the $5,000 there," Trump said during a campaign rally in Georgia on Friday, referring to a financial reward he promised if Republicans win the midterm elections for the US Congress.

For his part, Macron, in remarks from the European Council headquarters in Brussels on the eve of the protests, called for "calm," saying: "There is a constitutional right to protest, but this right is coupled with the need to show respect."

On the ground, hundreds of protesters gathered in Place de la République in Paris, where the main march began with a limited number of "yellow vest" protesters participating. Police fired tear gas at the crowds, even though the gathering was initially peaceful, according to CNN.

In Lyon, police used tear gas to disperse around 300 people who had gathered outside Jean Moulin University, according to French broadcaster BFM TV. Protests also took place in Rennes and Marseille, where police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

The French channel reported the arrest of about 100 people in the Paris region, mostly on suspicion of possessing prohibited protective equipment.
