In central Russia, temperatures rose to +22-24 °C in some areas, in the Volga region to +20 °C, and on the Black Sea coast and in Crimea they continued at +22-27 °C. Even in the Urals and Siberia, the temperature was 2-4 degrees Celsius higher than usual.
As explained by Georgy Shishkin, a senior professor at Kazan Federal University, the reason is a large, relatively immobile high-pressure system over the East European Plain. This has altered the usual movement of air masses, channeling warm, subtropical air into the country for an extended period while simultaneously suppressing cold air incursions. According to the Russian Meteorological Center, the average daily temperature may exceed the norm by 8°C or more in the Middle and Lower Volga regions.
This is not a "malfunction" caused by climate change, but rather an anomaly created by the natural cycle of the atmosphere.
But global warming is exacerbating such phenomena, and according to the expert, Russia is warming at about twice the global average. A strong El Niño event may also be contributing to the overall warming of the planet.
The expert added that prolonged warmth can disrupt seasonal rhythms, causing plants to flower again and be less prepared for frost, and animals and insects to lose their usual characteristics. However, a warm autumn does not guarantee a mild winter. The meteorological center predicts significant temperature fluctuations.
