Verstappen outperformed Italian Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and Briton Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari in a race that was delayed by more than 90 minutes due to heavy rain and water accumulating on the track.
Verstappen secured his first victory of the year, while George Russell's retirement gave a major boost to his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, at the top of the overall drivers' standings.
Four-time world champion Verstappen has not won a race since the final race of last season, but the upgrades made by Red Bull to his car have put him back in contention in Malaysia this week.
"Great job, guys, amazing," Verstappen said over his team's radio station after winning the Bahrain Grand Prix.
