Why do you crave alcohol when you're hungry? Fruit flies reveal the secret in the human brain

Researchers from Brown University in the United States have discovered a molecular link between hunger and the formation of "reward perception," which plays a role in alcohol addiction. This discovery may contribute to the development of therapeutic and preventive methods.

In this experiment, researchers used fruit flies to determine why alcohol becomes more appealing when hungry. This discovery helps explain how alcohol addiction develops.

During the experiment, researchers isolated the VUMa3 neuron in the fruit fly brain, the neuron responsible for producing octopamine—a substance similar to human norepinephrine. This neuron was found to be responsible for linking hunger with the perception of alcohol as a source of pleasure; when the fly felt hungry, it began to prefer alcohol more quickly. Furthermore, this neuron's effect was only observed in conditions of food scarcity.

According to researchers, internal psychological states, such as hunger, thirst, and pain, can alter the brain's ability to form "reward memories." This explains why the risk of addiction increases under stress and unfavorable conditions (such as food shortages).

The researchers point out that this is similar to a familiar pub sign that does not attract attention on ordinary days, but tempts one when one is hungry.

According to them, this information will help in better understanding how external and internal factors combine to stimulate strong cravings for alcohol.
