With only 0.5% of its original budget, "Call of Duty" is being cloned with artificial intelligence

With only 0.5% of its original budget, "Call of Duty" is being cloned with artificial intelligence

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was first released in 2009 and achieved tremendous success, immortalizing it in the minds of fans and players of the series. Perhaps this is what prompted independent developer Morris Heumann to redevelop the game independently, but using 17 AI agents and at a cost of up to $250,000.

Heumann explained in a post on his blog that the game's redevelopment project is now 99% complete compared to previous versions, meaning the game is working almost completely normally after it took him about 3 months of working with AI agents.
During this project, AI agents consumed approximately 500 billion tokens to fully program the game in the popular C++ language, according to a separate report by Toms Hardware about its efforts.

Human stated that Activision, the game's rights holder, and its parent company Microsoft, removed two previous blog posts about the enhanced version, as well as the initial versions that were available for online testing. The company did not respond to a request for comment, according to Toms Hardware.

Relying on tools available to everyone
Toms Hardware reported that the development process did not rely on super-intelligent AI tools or models not yet available for commercial use, as Human was able to consistently use Cloud Code and Codex applications to complete the task.

He also relied on a mix of models instead of leaving one model alone to do what was required, as he used the "Sonnet 5", "Ops 5.5" and even "Luna", "Sol" and "Tera" models from ChatGPT.

The initial stages of the work were done by only 4 AI agents, 3 working and one reviewing behind them, but as the work developed, it needed to use 17 AI agents in parallel.

To address the problems of AI hallucinations and agent errors, Human added an hourly synchronization task that requires all agents to reread the instructions given to them and the ultimate goal.

A month of faulty codes
Heumann added that the first month of the agents' work produced a set of faulty codes that, although readable and functional, were completely wrong in terms of their functions, with programming logic invented by them that did not work correctly.

This required redoing the code produced in the first month, reviewing the way agents worked, and setting clear criteria for accepting their results, which took longer than writing the code itself.

Part of the original cost
Human did not specify the source of funding that the project relied on primarily, and only referred to the consumption of tokens and their cost through the API commands of each company individually.

Despite this, the cost revealed, which amounted to about $250,000, represents no more than 0.50% of the total cost of developing the original game in 2009, as a report by the American tech website "The Expest" reveals that the cost of developing the original game reached about $50 million, not including the cost of advertising and promotion, which reached $200 million.

Therefore, even if artificial intelligence can develop the game programmatically, a large part of the process depends on developing the idea, the story, and the characters within it, which partially requires human intervention.
