According to her, one common mistake is to consider any size in the abdominal area as simply excess fat. She says: "The appearance of this area does not depend solely on the amount of subcutaneous fat, because the condition of the skin, muscles, and connective tissue, body shape, posture, and changes in the anterior abdominal wall after pregnancy are all important factors as well."

The doctor points out that during pregnancy, the skin stretches, muscles are subjected to additional pressure, and the position of organs and the distribution of tissues change. Some women also experience separation of the rectus abdominis muscles after childbirth. As a result, a woman who has given birth may return to her previous weight, but her body shape will remain different.

She says: "Not all changes that occur after childbirth can be automatically linked to weight gain. If a woman loses some weight but her abdomen is still protruding, this problem in some cases requires muscle strengthening and fitness restoration exercises, and in cases of major anatomical changes, it may require surgical intervention."

According to the doctor, another common myth is that abdominal exercises alone can burn localized fat. While hundreds of exercises can strengthen abdominal muscles, they don't guarantee a reduction in fat accumulation in that specific area. Furthermore, the position of the pelvis and spine affects the appearance of the abdomen. For example, a prominent lumbar curve can make the front abdominal wall appear more prominent.

In addition, sometimes after weight loss, it's not the fat that remains, but the skin. This problem is especially noticeable after significant weight loss. If the skin has been stretched for a long time, it may not have enough ability to contract.

She says: "In this case, losing more weight will not solve the problem. Moreover, if a woman continues to lose weight in an attempt to get rid of the remaining belly fat, she may lose volume in areas where she needs it, while the excess skin remains."

According to her, depending on the cause, the doctor may consider different corrective options: liposuction to remove localized fat deposits, or a tummy tuck to remove noticeable excess skin and changes in the tissues of the anterior abdominal wall.

She notes that if the abdomen appears flat in the morning but becomes noticeably bloated by the evening, the cause may be bloating, dietary habits, or digestive problems.

She says: "There is no single exercise or procedure that works for all women to get a flat stomach. One woman may need to lose weight, another may need to regain muscle strength, a third may need to address the condition of her skin, and after pregnancy, it may be necessary to have an assessment of the abdominal wall. Therefore, it is best to start not with a new, strict diet, but with understanding the exact reason behind the increased size of the abdomen."
