This confirmation was achieved after Zverev defeated Dutch tennis player Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament. The victory, which took one hour and 35 minutes, ensured Zverev became the 30th player to ever top.
"It's very special. Feeling on top of the world is incredible. It's a different feeling than winning a tournament or a title, but it's a very special feeling to know your name will be at number one when the new rankings are released".
The 29-year-old said he was highly motivated as he realized a win over Griekspoor would ensure he reached the highest ranking in his career.
"I was very focused and motivated for a few reasons. Of course, being number one is one of the things I'm really thinking about. I think I played a really good match and I'm happy with the result," said Zverev.
