Based on the official announcement from the two clubs quoted from the AC Milan website in Jakarta, Friday morning, the stadium design was introduced at an event at Castello Sforzesco, Milan, Italy.
"FC Internazionale Milano and AC Milan today unveiled the Generali Stadium, their future home. The new stadium is designed to bring the spirit of San Siro into a new era and become a new icon for the city of Milan," read a joint statement from the two clubs.
Both clubs stated that the project is a long-term investment that is not only aimed at improving football facilities, but also supporting the development of the Milan urban area.
"More than just a football stadium, this project is a long-term investment in the future of two of the most historic clubs in world football, a new home for generations of supporters, and a destination designed to support Milan's cultural, economic and urban development," the statement continued.
Generali Stadium was designed by two international architectural firms, Foster + Partners and MANICA, through the collaboration of architects Norman Foster and David Manica.
The stadium building will have an X-shaped exterior structure with a double-curved roof inspired by the architectural character of the City of Milan, including the Duomo Cathedral.
The X-shaped structure will support the roof of the stadium, while the double-curved design is one of the main features of the building.
The new stadium is also designed to maintain the match atmosphere that has long been the identity of San Siro.
The two stands behind the goal, or curva, will remain an important part of the stadium, one each for Inter Milan and AC Milan supporters.
The north stand or Curva Nord is for Inter Milan supporters, while the south stand or Curva Sud is for AC Milan supporters.
Both stands are designed with an incline of up to 37 degrees to bring spectators closer to the pitch and maintain the atmosphere of the match.
The stadium, with a capacity of around 71,500 spectators, will have two levels of stands surrounding the pitch with expansive views from various seating positions.
