ABTI lobbies Malaysia to have handball included in the 2027 SEA Games

The Indonesian Handball Association  continues to strive to ensure that handball remains a sport to be contested at the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia, following news that the sport was not included in the competition list.

Chairman of the Indonesian Handball Association , Zulfydar Zaidar Mochtar, said that his party had communicated with the President of the Southeast Asian Handball Federation to find a solution so that handball would still have the opportunity to appear at the biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia.

"I have communicated with the President of Southeast Asian Handball and tried to convince the Indonesian NOC and the host nation to participate in the implementation," said Zulfydar after the inauguration of the PB ABTI for the 2026-2030 term.

He acknowledged that the decision regarding which sports to compete in rests with the host country. However, he said there are still opportunities to promote handball through communication with regional federations and organizers in Malaysia.

Zulfydar said that until now, no optimal way had been found to convince the government and the Malaysian Olympic Committee to include handball in the 2027 SEA Games.

However, he believes that Malaysia has made quite good progress in this sport, so there is still an opportunity to open communication.

As an alternative, Zulfydar proposed that beach handball be included in the competition, not just indoor handball.

"I propose that beach events be included in the competition, not just indoor events. Beach events are also developing globally, and we are still communicating about this," said Zulfydar.
