Experts suggest that the color of blood is more related to the physics of light than to the biology of blood. But the question remains: why does blood appear red?
Scientists explained that the red color of blood is due to hemoglobin , a protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen to tissues.
Oxygenated hemoglobin (saturated with oxygen) appears bright red, which explains the color of arterial blood.
Deoxygenated hemoglobin (lacking oxygen) is darker, with a maroon color, and this is what characterizes venous blood.
The reason veins appear blue is due to an optical illusion caused by the interaction of light with the skin and tissues, according to scientists:
Light absorption : Red light with longer wavelengths penetrates tissues more deeply and is partially absorbed by the blood, while short blue light is reflected and reaches our eyes.
Wavelength distribution : Venous blood is darker than arterial blood, but the blue color we see is caused by light reflected from the surface tissues, not the blood itself.
Perceptual characteristics : The brain interprets colors based on the contrast between the color of the skin and blood vessels, so veins appear blue or purple on warm skin.
Skin thickness and vein depth : Veins closer to the skin surface appear less blue, while deeper ones appear more blue because the reflected light is affected by their depth.
Thus, blood appears red and veins blue as a result of the interaction of light with tissues , and not because venous blood is actually blue.
