Proactiv has recalled tens of thousands of its cosmetic products in the US after discovering they contained benzene, a substance linked to leukemia and other cancers.
This recall comes after tests showed that Emergency Blemish Relief Cream and Skin Smoothing Exfoliator contained unsafe levels of benzene.
The company announced that the recall includes:
38,237 0.33 oz. jars of Emergency Blemish Relief Cream, from production lots V3304A and V3305A, with an expiration date of October 31, 2025.
3,500 6 oz Skin Smoothing Exfoliator, Lot V4204A, Best Before July 31, 2025.
This recall has been classified by the FDA as a Category 2 product, meaning it may cause temporary or medically treatable adverse health effects.
Although the risk of leukemia from exposure to benzene in these products is low, the FDA has warned that continued exposure to benzene can lead to serious health problems.
Benzene is a common chemical in many industries and is used in products such as adhesives and rubber. In some cases, benzoyl peroxide (used in some acne products) can break down into benzene, increasing the risk of contamination. Studies have shown that prolonged occupational exposure to benzene, such as occurs in certain industrial sectors, can cause significant health problems.
It's worth noting that the recall of these products comes after the US Food and Drug Administration announced the recall of six other products that also contained high levels of benzene, including some popular acne creams and treatments from well-known brands such as L'Oréal and Walgreens.
Recalled products also include:
La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo Acne Treatment.
Walgreens Acne Cleanser.
Proactiv+ cream for treating emergency blemishes.
Proactiv skin smoothing scrub.
