Academics: Strengthen the narrative of harmony amid global conflict

Head of the Terrorism Studies Study Program, School of Strategic and Global Studies University of Indonesia, Muhamad Syauqillah, emphasized the importance of efforts to strengthen the narrative of harmony and peace among the nation's children amidst the recent global conflicts.

Syauqillah said the opening of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia explicitly mandates peace and humanity. Indonesia takes a role in carrying out the constitutional mandate with the principle of non-alignment initiated by the nation's founders.

"Indonesia has an obligation to maintain world peace through an active, free foreign policy," said Syauqillah.

According to him, Indonesia's role is voiced through diplomacy, dialogue, and solidarity because the principle of active freedom needs to be maintained so that the country does not become a proxy for external powers. He also proposed that diplomatic mechanisms be strengthened to prevent military escalation that has a wide impact.

"Strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz or the Suez Canal will be shaken if the conflict continues to be provoked. Automatically, this condition will cause global economic losses if the tension is not stopped. Dialogic solutions must be prioritized wherever the conflict arises," he said.

On the other hand, Syauqillah said that the humanitarian values in Pancasila need to be strengthened as a bridge that unites various differences while reducing provocations arising from the conflict, especially those in the name of religion.

For him, provocative actions in the name of faith are a distortion of the true teachings. For that reason, he emphasized that solidarity with victims of conflict should be carried out without ignoring domestic unity.

"We must show solidarity with the victims of humanity, but not to the point of dividing the nation," he said.

He also explained that the analysis of radicalism is emphasized on the use of arbitrary violence. Extremist groups have been highlighted for using social media to spread hatred so that it can damage the climate of tolerance.

"Pancasila is a panacea to reject all forms of radicalism. In this case, the role of religious organizations and the wider community is embraced so that democracy is not misused as a sectarian path," he said.

Furthermore, Syauqillah hopes that the spirit of diversity and national unity will be used as a strong capital to face the influence of radicalism, both from abroad and within the country. The principle of unity contained in Pancasila must be brought to life at various levels of society.
