Chinese drone giant DJI is entering the smart home cleaning market with the launch of its first series of robotic vacuum cleaners on Wednesday (August 6), expanding its technological expertise beyond aerial devices.
The new product line, dubbed the DJI ROMO series, combines sweeping and mopping functions, leveraging the company's environmental sensing and intelligent path planning technology originally developed for its drone operations.
"ROMO represents DJI's first strategic shift from the field of aerial intelligence to home cleaning scenarios," said Zhang Xiaonan, a Shenzhen-based DJI spokesperson.
While the home floor is different from the aerial environment, the basic principles remain the same: using intelligent navigation, environmental perception, and precision control to enable machines to serve humans more effectively and intelligently, Zhang said.
DJI's drone expertise positions it to address key challenges in the robotic vacuum industry, Zhang added.
The company said the ROMO series is expected to launch in overseas markets later this year, although specific launch dates and regions have not yet been confirmed.
Worldwide shipments of robotic vacuums reached 20.6 million units in 2024, up 11.2 percent year-on-year, according to market research firm IDC. IDC's first-quarter 2025 report shows global shipments increased to 5.1 million units, an 11.9 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Chinese brands such as Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, and Xiaomi occupied four of the top five positions by shipment volume.
