Palestinian talks with Tony Blair and the European Union ahead of the Sharm el-Sheikh summit; gas and fuel trucks enter Gaza.

In a post on his X account, the sheikh said, "I met today with Mr. Blair (in the Jordanian capital, Amman) to discuss the day after (the war) and ways to make President (US) Donald Trump's efforts successful, which aim to stop the war and establish lasting peace in the region."

He continued: "We affirmed our readiness to work with President Trump, Mr. Blair, and relevant partners to consolidate the ceasefire, deliver aid, release prisoners (Israeli and Palestinian), and move toward recovery and reconstruction."

The two sides also stressed "the importance of halting the undermining of the Palestinian Authority, particularly the return of Palestinian funds withheld (by Israel), and preventing the undermining of the two-state solution in preparation for comprehensive and lasting peace in accordance with international law," according to Al-Sheikh's tweet.

Under the Trump plan, the Gaza Strip would be subject to temporary transitional governance by a technocratic, non-political Palestinian committee responsible for managing daily public services and municipal affairs for Gaza's residents.

The committee will consist of qualified Palestinians and international experts, under the supervision of a new international transitional body called the "Peace Council," chaired by Trump and attended by other heads of state to be announced later, in addition to Tony Blair.

Talks with the European Union

In this context, the Palestinian government and the European Union discussed, on Sunday, intensifying joint action and greater engagement in arrangements for the next phase following the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

This came during a meeting between Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and the European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, Christophe Bigot, in the city of Ramallah, in the central West Bank.

Mustafa stressed "the importance of international support for the State of Palestine's efforts to unify the institutions of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, to complete the process of embodying the Palestinian state on the ground," according to what was reported by the official Palestinian news agency, WAFA.

He stressed the need to "pressure Israel to release withheld Palestinian funds and stop attacks in the West Bank, including Jerusalem."

WAFA quoted Bejo as affirming "the European Union's support for relief, recovery, and reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip, the resumption of the Rafah crossing mission's work, and the government's efforts toward institutional reform and development."

Gas and fuel trucks

In a related development, a limited number of aid trucks carrying gas and fuel began entering Gaza on Sunday, after Israel had barred them from entering the Strip for two years, with the exception of the January 2025 truce period and the small quantities delivered to international organizations.

Local sources reported the arrival of a limited number of trucks carrying gas and fuel, coming from the Kerem Shalom crossing (south), which is under Israeli control, pursuant to the ceasefire agreement that went into effect on Friday.

Over the course of two years of genocide, Israel has prevented the entry of gas and fuel into the Gaza Strip, with the exception of limited quantities that arrived during the truce period last January, and meager quantities  as hospitals.

Since Israel's complete closure of the crossings on March 2, two weeks before the ceasefire collapsed, and until Sunday, Palestinians in Gaza have not received cooking gas or fuel.

For more than two months, Israel has allowed the entry of an average of 60-70 aid trucks per day, in addition to a limited number of cargo trucks, but these did not include fuel or gas.

On Thursday, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on the first phase of his ceasefire and prisoner exchange plan, following indirect negotiations between the two sides in Sharm el-Sheikh, with the participation of Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar, and under US supervision.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel went into effect at 12:00 noon on Friday, Jerusalem time (09:00 GMT), after the Israeli government approved the agreement at dawn.

The agreement is based on a plan proposed by Trump, which calls for a ceasefire, a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army, a mutual release of prisoners, the immediate entry of aid into the Gaza Strip, and the disarmament of Hamas.

With American support, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 8, 2023, leaving 67,806 martyrs and 170,066 wounded, most of them children and women, and causing a famine that claimed the lives of 463 Palestinians, including 157 children.
