A macOS update makes the MacBook screen function as a ring light

Apple is reportedly preparing a new feature called Edge Light in the macOS Tahoe 26.2 operating system update, which will allow the computer screen to function like a ring light when users make video calls.

As reported by Engadget on Thursday, this feature is present in the latest developer beta version of macOS and is designed to improve the lighting of the user's face without the need for additional devices.

Edge Light displays a rectangular light at the edge of the screen, while Apple's Neural Engine adjusts the light's position based on detecting the user's face in the video frame.

Users can also adjust the color temperature to make the light appear warmer or cooler, as well as activate an automatic feature that turns on the lighting when the room becomes dimmer.

Edge Light is designed to be unobtrusive to the user interface. It doesn't cover the menu bar at the top of the screen and automatically shifts when the cursor moves to the edge of the screen, allowing users to continue their normal activities during a video call.

The feature will only be available on MacBooks released after 2024 that use Apple Silicon chips .

While it hasn't completely replaced the function of a conventional ring light , the Edge Light is said to be a significant improvement for users who frequently hold online meetings or video calls without additional lighting equipment.
