Google sues hacker group behind large-scale SMS scam

Google is suing a group of Chinese hackers who operate a platform called "Lighthouse," a provider of phishing and SMS fraud services ( smishing ) used to carry out large-scale fraud.

As reported by Engadget on Thursday, in its statement, Google explained that the group offered services for clients to send electronic messages or SMS containing links to fake sites that resembled the official pages of various well-known brands, such as USPS and EZ Pass.

The goal is to trick users into entering personal data or accessing their accounts. Google discovered at least 107 login page templates with the Google logo used to steal user information.

The technology company said that around one million people in 121 countries were victims of online fraud using the Lighthouse platform, with total losses reaching US$1 billion.
