Google Maps embeds Gemini AI to improve navigation capabilities

Google has embedded the Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) model to enhance the capabilities of its Google Maps navigation application.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Thursday, this update allows users to interact with an AI-based virtual assistant while driving, get more accurate navigation guidance, and perform various other tasks without having to touch the screen.

While driving, users can now ask Gemini to answer questions about points of interest along their route, provide general information such as breaking news or sports results, and even add events to their calendar.

Users can also ask follow-up questions, such as, "Are there any budget-friendly restaurants with vegan menus near my route? What about parking there?"

Additionally, drivers can also report traffic incidents using Gemini, while Google Maps will proactively notify users of disruptions on their routes.

Google also introduced a new navigation feature that combines Gemini with Street View data to improve the accuracy of directions.

While Maps previously provided distance-based instructions, such as “turn right after 500 meters,” the system now uses visual markers such as gas stations, restaurants, or landmarks visible nearby.

Google explains that Gemini connects data from more than 250 million locations with Street View imagery to identify important locations that can be used as references in navigation.

Google Maps will also work with Google Lens to answer questions about their surroundings. Users can simply point their phone's camera at a restaurant or tourist attraction and ask, for example, "What is this place and why is it popular?"

The Gemini-based navigation feature will begin rolling out gradually to iOS and Android devices over the next few weeks. Support for Android Auto will follow soon.

Meanwhile, traffic alerts are rolling out first to Android users in the United States, landmark-based navigation is also available in the United States for iOS and Android, and Lens integration with Gemini will begin working in the country later this month.
