Co-infection in respiratory tract disease increases severity

Co-infection in respiratory tract disease increases severity  Dr. dr. Nastiti Kaswandani, Sp.A(K), a member of the Respirology Coordination Unit of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), said that multiple infections, or coinfections, in respiratory tract diseases can lead to more severe illnesses in children.

"So, if there's more than one, it's called a coinfection. What are these coinfections? Coinfections can involve two or more viruses, two or three viruses, or even a virus and bacteria—it can happen," Nastiti said during an online discussion on "Recognizing and Being Aware of Superflu" in Jakarta on Monday.

Nastiti said that based on research reports found in children who were hospitalized for respiratory tract diseases such as acute pneumonia with symptoms of shortness of breath to the point of requiring oxygen, when traced to the pathogen causing the disease, it was often not just one but two or three pathogens.

Coinfection is a concept that always occurs in respiratory tract diseases and can be more than one virus or a combination with bacteria.
