Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Eddy Soeparno, is pushing for the ratification of the Draft Law (RUU) on Climate Change Management as a reflection of the increasingly widespread impacts of climate change by 2025.
As the new year of 2026 approaches, Eddy is pushing for expedited deliberations on the bill as an effort to prevent and mitigate the impacts of climate change, which are increasingly being felt by various segments of society.
"In 2025, we will experience a climate anomaly, with flooding occurring during the dry season. It will be difficult to distinguish between the rainy and dry seasons," said Eddy in a written statement received.
According to him, the uncertain climate conditions, among other things, have an impact on farmers' planting and harvesting periods, which have become irregular, while fishermen on the coast are increasingly under pressure from tidal flooding.
The most obvious impact, added Eddy, is the hydrometeorological disaster that occurred in almost all regions in Indonesia.
"In Bali, major flooding has occurred again after almost 60 years. In Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, we have witnessed flash floods that have killed thousands of people. This must be addressed immediately," he said.
As a member of the 12th House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia in charge of environmental affairs, Eddy admitted that he was committed to fighting for the acceleration of the ratification of the Climate Change Management Bill in parliament.
"I am grateful for successfully pushing the Climate Change Management Bill into a Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) in 2026, but the struggle must continue by expediting the Climate Change Management Bill into law," he said.
According to him, the Climate Change Management Bill will provide a strong legal basis for the government to implement policies to prevent the spread of climate change impacts in a coordinated and synergistic manner.
He pushed for the bill to specifically emphasize the state's commitment to preventing the impacts of climate change through sustainable, environmentally conscious development and strict law enforcement against environmental damage.
In addition, the bill is also pushed to provide a clear and firm legal basis for coordination between the central government and regional governments in addressing climate change.
