Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi) Nezar Patria emphasized that critical thinking skills are the primary defense for children in an era of information overload and the rise of hoax content created by artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
"The ability to sort, analyze, and verify information is a highly valuable skill. This is key to keeping us sane and healthy in the digital world, not just passive recipients," Nezar said at the Mutual Care of the Nation's Young Generation Forum in South Tangerang on Tuesday.
According to him, parents must build a foundation for critical thinking from an early age so that children are not easily deceived by content that seems convincing but is in fact false.
To train these skills, Nezar refers to a research strategy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) which consists of three stages, namely Learn , Evaluate , and Reflect .
The Learn stage emphasizes the importance of children having a strong knowledge base through books and real-world discussions so that their horizons are not limited to social media algorithms.
The next stage is Evaluate , which is building healthy skepticism by asking critical questions about every claim you see.
Meanwhile, the Reflect stage is crucial for identifying “synthetic realities” created by AI, such as deepfake technology .
