US imposes 25 percent tariff on Nvidia AI chip exports to China
After months of rumors circulating that the United States (US) government would impose tariffs on semiconductors, the policy has now officially taken effect on a number of chip types, including Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chip H200 which will be shipped to China.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Saturday, United States President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing a 25 percent import tariff on a number of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors, including the Nvidia H200 chip, which are manufactured abroad, entered into US territory, and then re-exported to other countries.

The tariffs cover advanced AI chips from a number of companies. Besides Nvidia, another chip product affected by the tariffs is the AMD MI325X.

This policy also formalizes the US Department of Commerce's previous decision to allow Nvidia to begin shipping H200 chips to certain customers in China since last December.

Despite the tariffs, Nvidia welcomed the move as it remains open to chip sales opportunities in the Chinese market.
