A recent study has shown that excessive internet use and browsing of social media sites is linked to increased feelings of lethargy and drowsiness during the day.
The study included 1,587 students, with researchers asking participants to complete questionnaires assessing their level of internet addiction, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and depressive symptoms. The results showed that increased internet use was associated with poorer sleep quality and higher rates of excessive daytime sleepiness .
The researchers indicated that the most prominent factor among internet addicts is disrupted sleep patterns , which partially explains the link between excessive use and fatigue and reduced alertness. They also found that symptoms of depression reinforce and exacerbate this effect.
The research team pointed to a complex interaction between psychological state and daily habits , with each reinforcing the other. They emphasized that regulating internet use and improving sleep quality can help reduce daytime sleepiness and improve overall health.
Other studies also warn that excessive screen use and lack of physical activity increase the risk of heart disease and metabolic disorders, negatively affect the nervous system, and may contribute to worsening depression, especially in children and adolescents.
