China's Turbofan Drone Completes First Test Flight

China's domestically produced F406 turbofan engine, with a thrust of up to 600 kilograms, has completed its maiden test flight in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Xinhua reported.

According to the Aero Engine Corporation of China, the developer, the flight was carried out using an advanced meteorological drone with a twin -engine configuration .

The successful flight marks the first time China has achieved independent control and domestic application of an advanced medium- and small-thrust turbofan engine in the general aviation power sector, the company said.

Developed by the company's technology subsidiary, the F406 successfully fills various technical gaps in China's medium- and small-thrust turbofan engine capabilities.

According to the company, the engine will be used on various mission platforms, including high-altitude inspection drones, communication relay drones, and long-endurance high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles.
