Argentine national team player Lionel Messi leads the list of top scorers in the first week of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with three goals.
Messi scored three goals after leading his country to a 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening Group J match at Kansas City Stadium, Kansas.
He also scored his first hat trick at the World Cup. Besides taking him to the top of the all-time scorers list, this achievement also saw him equal Germany's Miroslav Klose as the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup with 16 goals.
Messi's hat-trick proved too good for any of the other players who played their final matches of the first week with their respective teams on Thursday.
Most recently, Harry Kane's two goals in England's 4-2 win over Croatia on Thursday matched only the goals scored by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who earned their country three points on Wednesday.
Besides Kane, Mbappe and Haaland, the only two goalscorer at the World Cup was Folarin Balogun of the United States, who led his country to a 4-1 victory over Paraguay from Group D in their opening match on Saturday.
